From TM Lear #47677746 on 10-26-12:
I found that Bertha was previously married to Charles A Howland. In the 1930 Mayfield ID, Elmore Co Census an 11yr old stepson James Howland is listed. (He would've been stepson to the head of household, her husband Perry Virgil.) Upon further research I found her with her 1st husband Chs A. Howland and son James A. in the 1920 Ada Co. ID Census.

According to the Idaho Co. Marriages 1864-1950 on familysearch.org, Bertha married Charles A. Howland on June 10, 1908 in Boise ID, Ada Co. Her brother Verne Clawson & Miss Margie Weazel were witnesses. F. Hey Lemon, of Church of Christ joined them in matrimony.

I found Charles Howland on the SSDI listed on familysearch.org. He died in November 1971 in Wilder ID, Canyon Co.

Your facts are right on point, I just wanted to update with some corroboration. I am currently working on an oral history project with the son-in-law of Bertha and Perry Virgil (a man named Thomas Byrne, who married their daughter, Ina). So that is the first fact here, Ina should be listed as a daughter to Bertha and Perry, as well as Frank (named for his paternal grandfather who for a time resided with Perry and Bertha. I have both photos, and first hand accounts to verify that, along with a 1940 census that has them in the same household in Boise. Perry was a Taxi driver in Boise who operated out of the Idanha hotel. He also carried mail daily from Boise to Atlanta daily (in the 20s a crazy trip to be sure).

Bertha's brother lived with Perry and Bertha (whose middle name was Edna) in 1940, and was included in the census records in their household at the time. That Was William Drake who passed on 01/30/1944.

As the collections manager for the Byrne/Virgil collection, I have access to a lot of resources on this family. If you'd like any more let me know. I also am working on an oral history with Tom Byrne, he knows quite a lot about the
Virgils/Clawsons/Drakes/Howlands/Gibsons. Names I am confident your research will encounter.

Bertha was married to Chas. Howland for a time, and the son from that marriage, James, for a time resided in the Virgil household here in Boise. Bertha was born to Sarah "Sally Topping" (Drake) Clawson and her husband John Wesley Clawson. Sally was born in Chester Township, Morris, NJ on 02/21/1856. It appears that her father moved out to Idaho sometime between her birth and 1960, when the census records show her and her sister and brother living with their mother and another man in NJ, her father absent. Her mother died in 1962. Sally married, gave birth to four children, then moved all of them to Boise, and gave birth to four more children. Sarah is buried at Morris Hill with her son William Drake. Her husband JW Clawson is also buried there.
