Vernon F. "Vern" Altes, 86, of Sterling, died peacefully surrounded by family Nov. 16, 2010. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, with the Rev. Robert L. Wedow officiating. Services will conclude at the church. Inurnment will be at 10:15 a.m. Monday, Nov. 22, at Fort Logan National Cemetery, 3698 S. Sheridan Blvd., Denver.
Vern was born March 4, 1924, in Fults, Ill., to Sylvester and Amanda (Nagel) Altes. He was raised on the family farm with two sisters. He attended the University of Southern Illinois until he was called to serve his country.

He served in the Army/Air Force, reporting to duty at Scott Air Field Base in Illinois in April 1943. He spent basic training in Miami Beach, Fla. He attended school in various parts of the United States, including the Citadel in Charleston, S.C., and Casper, Wyo., specializing as a weight and balance expert for B-24s. After serving on Wake Island and honorable discharge in Salt Lake City, Utah, he returned to Casper.

Vern was employed by Standard Oil and Western Oil too in Casper. He moved to Denver in 1964, where after working for Mobil Housing, Inc. and various oil and gas companies, he became self-employed in 1984 with Altes Consulting, Inc., performing accounting services and joint venture auditing.

He married Barbara (Fehringer) Schaefer on March 11, 1989, at All Souls Catholic Church in Englewood. He moved to Sterling in 1991.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Shrine Club in Casper, and the Elks Club in Sterling. He enjoyed playing bridge, watching all sports and playing golf.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; sisters, Ellen Kuergeleis and Melba Asselmeier, both of Illinois; daughters, Susan K. Altes of Littleton, Carol A. Cooper and husband Norm of Littleton; daughter-in-law, Sharron D. Altes of Ocala, Fla.; step-children, Steve Schaefer and wife Cathy of Fort Collins, Rod Schaefer and wife Lois of San Diego, Calif., Jeanette Beam and husband Rich, Marilyn Gerk and husband Jim, Gerry Schaefer and wife Carrie, all of Sterling, Joan Marin and husband Gary of Iliff, and DeeAnn Ross and husband Glenn of Wiley, Texas; grandchildren, Anna K. Cooper, Robert B. Altes and wife Karen, Kristin Clarke and husband Ken, Robin Sanders and husband Rodney, Ryan Schaefer and wife Jen, Ashley Dorado and husband Tavo, Brandon, Stephanie and Kyle Beam, Troy Gerk and wife Dawn, Kristin Nichols and husband Brandon, Jeremy Gerk and wife Jaime, Jared and Lyndsey Schaefer, Tyler, Amy and Marissa Marin, Shawn, Courtney and Payton Ross, Tawny Flippen; 10 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other loved ones and friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Dean Altes.

Vern's memory may be honored with donations to the Vern Altes Memorial Fund or charity of choice.
