Jason Henry Austin, 89, of Star City, died Wednesday August 19, 2009, surrounded by his family at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff, just 2 days shy of his 90th birthday.

He was born at Cleveland County on August 21, 1919, the son of the late Henry Jackson and Mary Addiline Tucker Austin.

He graduated from Star City High School in 1936 and later began a 33 year career of government service in the Lincoln County office of the Soil Conservation Service. During this time he was involved in the planning of the Grady/Gould Watershed Project and oversaw its completion. He was also instrumental in the planning stages of Cane Creek Lake and State Park just outside of Star City. After retirement, he spent 27 years as a member of the Board of Lincoln County Conservation District where he worked as an assistant to Lincoln County Judge Charles Green. He also did work for the Housing and Urban Development Agency, which provided better housing for the underprivileged. He helped write the grant that established the Yorktown Water Association, served as Manager of the Association and served on the Board of Directors for a total of 25 years, obtaining easements and overseeing construction. He also made the original survey for the construction of the runway of the Star City Municipal Airport. He served as a committee member in the planning and completion of the Star City Town Square and refurbishment of the historic clock tower. He was a co-founder of the Sanders Creek Hunting Club 40+ years ago. He was a life-long member of the Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Palmyra community where he served as Sunday School teacher and spending lots of time with the youth, influencing several generations. He was a steward of the forest by being a tree farmer.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Jason Leon Austin; 2 brothers, Hugh Austin, JV Austin; and a sister, Ophie Austin Taylor.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Ernestine McGriff Austin; sister, Hattie Mae Austin Maddox of Searcy; daughter, Gwen Austin Ferguson and husband Mike of Kingsland, TX; son, David Austin and wife Barbara of Star City; 5 grandchildren Randy Raley and wife Chaney of Atlanta, TX, Rhonda Raley of Huntsville, TX, Kelly Ferguson Prew and husband Travis of Tyler, TX, Shane Austin of Washington, DC, Tracy Austin Wilkerson of Star City; 4 great grandchildren, Lee and Lyndy Raley of Atlanta, TX, Austin Jeffrey Wilkerson of Star City, Presley Kate Prew of Tyler, TX; as well as his beloved nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Griffin Funeral Chapel in Star City. Bro. John Marlar and Bro. Onas Gray will officiate. Burial will be in Leek Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

The family will be at the home at 427 Freedom Road outside Star City. The family wishes to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers during this difficult period.
