He lived in Rush, NY for many years, near his father. In about 1866 he moved to Mecklenburg, NY. He changed his occupation from a farmer to a miller. He started a Lumbar Mill business with son-in-law, Joseph C Armitage, called "Davis and Armitage". There business partnership was dissolved on 12-4-1867, and was then just run by him.

He is the son of Ethan Davis and Betsy Hazard.
