King of Norway 1093-1103. He was the son of Olav II Kyrre and his mistress, Thora Jonsdottir. He acquired his nickname "Barefoot" due of his habit of wearing Gaelic-style clothing, which left his lower legs bare. He ascended the throne in September 1093 after his father's death. In 1101 he married Margaret Fredkulla, the daughter of King Inge the Elder and Queen Helena of Sweden, which was arranged as part of a peace treaty between Norway and Sweden. In 1103, he set out with his army to invade and conquer Ireland. A large opposing Irish force ambushed them by surprise near the present day site of Downpatrick, Northern Ireland, and Magnus was killed in the ensuing battle. The exact location of his burial has never been fully determined. He was jointly succeeded to the Norwegian throne by his illegitimate sons, Oystein, Sigurd, and Olaf Magunsson.
