Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A successful and wealthy railroad executive, when the Civil War began he offered hi services, and was commissioned as a Captain, United States Volunteers on August 8, 1861, and assigned to the staff his son-in-law, Major General John A. McClernand. He was eventually promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, and served as Chief Quartermaster of the XIII Army Corps. He resigned on June 11, 1864, and was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "Meritorious services in the Field".
