Death Takes Noted Pianist
Arthur J. (Art) Devaney, 47, professional pianist, band leader and music teacher died of a sudden illness early Monday morning at a Traverse City hospital.
Mr.Devaney was graduated from Saginaw High School and attended Harvard University and the New England Conservatory of Music. He was known for his "Society Band" which gave popular music a classical touch.
He recorded Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" while touring with Freddy Martin's orchestra. He was also popular with many devotees for his interpretation of Chopin.
His band played at Holiday Inn this May and June and his group also played at the Top of the Park for the season two years ago. He also was booked at Boyne Highland. He had been a resident of the Traverse City area for the past several years.
Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Grace Devaney of Lincoln, Nebraska; a brother, Robert Devaney of the intercollegiate athletic department at the University of Nebraska; three daughters; and several grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin H. Devaney and a brother Ralph who was killed in World War II.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Case funeral home, 409 Adams, Saginaw, Michigan, Wednesday at 11 a.m.
