Published in the Lansing State Journal - September 19, 2006 - Mary V. (Medrano) Garibay Lansing, MI Age 77, passed away September 16, 2006. She was born July 29, 1929 in San Antonio, TX. Maria lived and worked in Lansing for many years. She was very active in social and volunteer issues. A retired State Employee, Maria served as a Migrant Program Case Worker, working tirelessly in migrant camps for a cause she believed strongly in. She also was Founder/Chairperson of the American G.I. Forum, Pedro Mireles Women's Chapter of Lansing, a non-profit organization focusing on educational advancement for disadvantaged families. She was also active in the Cristo Rey Community Center and a member of Cristo Rey Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Adam Garibay; infant daughter, Doris; brother, Leroy Salazar; grandson, Gilbert Joseph Bermea; and son-in-law, Francisco Z. Gamez. Surviving are 5 daughters, Dolores Gamez, Dorothy (Ramiro) Rodriguez, Darlene Flores, Debrah (David) Vielma and Donna (Albert) Deleon; 4 sons, Dario Medrano, Jr., Dale Medrano, Sr., Darrow (Paula) Medrano, Sr. and Daniel Medrano; and her children's father, Dario Medrano, Sr. Also surviving are 21 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Paul Salazar and Gilbert Salazar, Sr.; sister, Annie (Manuel) Veliz. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, September 21, 10:00 a.m. at Cristo Rey Catholic Church, 201 W. Miller Road, Lansing with the Rev. Frederick L. Thelen, Pastor, officiating. The Rite of Committal will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing. The family will receive friends at the Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Homes, 900 E. Michigan Avenue Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. Visitations will also be received at Cristo Rey Catholic Church Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. with the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Those wishing to honor Maria may do so be sending donations to Cristo Rey Catholic Church.
