Married to Rose Georgia Simril on 11 Sep 1946 in York., SC. They had two children, Sandra "Sandy" Yvonne Smith Harrington Sigler (11 Nov 1947 - 06 Feb 1997) and Kathy Lynn Smith Givens Brewer. He had two grandchildren: Melanie Givens Wynter and Jaime Harrington Bryan. He was an entrepreneur. He owned two bars on Hwy. 74 at the River, they were Nancy's and Tony's.

He served aboard the U.S.S. Saidor as one of the first crews and had a certificate naming him as a "Plank Holder." He served as a Gunner's Mate 3rd Class during World War II (25 April 1945 - 22 July 1946).

Second Man Enters Race From Ward 5

Gastonia's Ward 5 now has two candidates for a city council seat in the May 4 municipal election. A mailing machine salesman for Pitney Bowes, James Milton Smith, filed Monday afternoon. Smith who lives at 908 N. Broad St. is making his first bid for an elective office.

Robert L. Withers, chief clerk and accountant for Gas Pipe Line Corp, also filed Monday from Ward 5. The Ward 5 seat is now held by Marshall Rauch, who is not running. Smith works for Pitney-Bowes Inc. covering the area of Gaston County. He came here from Charlotte in 1956 at that time with Home Beneficial Life Insurance Co.

He and his wife, the former Rose Simril, have two children: Sandra, 17 and Kathy, 13. Smith said he has been planning for about two years to run for the city council and added now appears to be the right time to run and to serve.

He said that if elected, he will do as good a job as possible. He said he is running as an independent. Smith is a member of First Methodist Church and past president of the Builders Class. He is an officer in Gastonia Lodge AF AM, and a member of the Gaston Shrine Club, and the Oasis Temple. He is also a De-Molay advisor. He is on the membership committee of the Chamber of Commerce.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 Tuesday afternoon at the West Chapel of McEwen Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Rev. Howard Jordan, associate pastor of First United Methodist Church of Gastonia, where he was a member, will officiate.

Masonic graveside services will be held at Sharon Memorial Park, Charlotte, by King Solomon Masonic Lodge No. 704.

Smith was born March 23, 1927, in Mooresville, the son of James Dennis Smith and Lily Starnes Smith, Charlotte.

Self-employed, he was a Mastier Mason, York Rite Mason, a member of Oasis Temple, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Simril of Charlotte; two daughters, Miss Kathy Lynn Smith, Charlotte, and Mrs. Sandra Beaty, Charlotte; his parents; two brothers, Wayne L. Smith, Charlotte, and Ned Smith, Hickory; a half brother, A. A. Starnes, Charlotte, and a sister, Mrs. M. B. Dennis, Jacksonville, Fla.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.
