Author. She is remembered as the wife of Rev. Lorenzo Dow, an itinerant evangelist preacher and author of the 19th century. Her husband was known for his four-volume autobiography along with other books on religion. The couple married on September 4, 1804. At first she traveled on horseback with her husband on evangelistic tours through the wilderness of the frontier of the United States. Sleeping rough in the woods, this was a trying adventure for a man much less a New England lady. While she was traveling with her husband, she wrote a journal. Arriving in December of 1805, she traveled with him to England. During the forty-seven day crossing, she was the only lady on board the ship, "Centurion." This became a year-and-half trip, touring England as well as Ireland. At one point, she and her husband settled in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana to operate a mill but returned to New England by 1808. Later, she stayed home melancholy and waiting for her husband, who would be gone on evangelistic tours lasting for an year to eighteen months. Her husband warned her of the demands of his religious calling before their marriage and she had accepted the terms. The couple embraced poverty for the gospel's sake. In 1815 she published "Collection of Poetry," which was used for hymns. Her journal, which was published posthumously in 1833 by her husband, was "Vicissitudes in the Wilderness." At the age of 39, she died from tuberculous after being bed-ridden for two years. The couple was childless. According to sources, she was buried perpendicularly with her feet down and her head upright. This was done in hope she would get to Heaven "easier"!
