In 1787 appointed to survey the "Miami Purchase" area of the Northwest Territory, in present-day Ohio.
Was one of the original proprietors of the city of Cincinnati. Also instrumental in the founding of the Ohio cities of Hamilton and Dayton.
As Surveyor General of the Northwest Territory he established the boundary line between the United States and the Indian Territory according to the terms of the Treaty of Greeneville of 1795.
Built his home at "Ludlow Station", and where he is buried at Spring Grove was at one time part of his original land grant.
