Mother: Sarah Neville Armstrong (1887-)
Married: Genevieve Myrtle Gashel (1914-2009), 28 Dec. 1947, Waterloo, Iowa.
No children
Don was born in Des Moines Iowa, the oldest of two children. He had a sister Helen. He graduated from North High School Jan. 1930, and then worked in various jobs, in 1932 with his own business in radio service. In 1936 he began work for the Railway Express Agency in Des Moines, and in 1938 transferred with the company to Waterloo, Iowa. World War II came and Don enlisted in the United States Navy on Oct. 1942, trained at Great Lakes, Illinois, took techical training at Gainsville, Georgia and Texas A&M as a radio technician. He served on Adak Island in the Aleutians off the Alaskan mainland. He was discharged Oct. 1945 at Minneapolis, Minnesota. Following his discharge he returned briefly to Waterloo, then enrolled in the Art Institute at Kansas City. He met Genevieve Gashel while at art school, and they had the mutual love of art in common. They were married 28 Dec. 1947 at her parents' home in Waterloo. He was a brief time in Kansas City, then returned to Waterloo and began work with the Railway Express Agency once again, doing art work on the side. He retired May 1974.
Don and Genevieve took many trips throughout the United States and left behind piles of scrapbooks of their trips. Don's chief hobbies besides his art work were going to parks with his metal detector and his ham radio. He would spend hours on the radio.
The two of them had four dogs during their years together, but the last dog, Mattie, was the dog that bonded most with Don and they became inseparable. When Don died Mattie literally also died, of a broken heart. She was cremated and her ashes are in Don's gravesite.
