Leonard Theadore "Ted" Wilcken
February 1, 1919 - November 18, 2010

Leonard Theadore Wilcken, age 91, of Vernal, passed away Nov. 18, 2010 at the Ashley Valley Regional Medical Center. He was born Feb. 1, 1919 in Hanna, Utah. The son of Joseph and Cleo May Wilcken, he was the third of six children. His siblings were Joe, Martha, Ted, Craig, Dick and Hal.

Ted grew up in Hanna on a cattle and sheep ranch and spent most of his life ranching, as did his parents. When asked recently what he would do if he had a million dollars, he replied that he would farm until it was all gone.

He grew up during the Great Depression, and said he didn't realize he had lived through it, because things were no different before or after as far as he was concerned.

Ted married Crystal Anne Hancock in the Salt Lake Temple on Oct. 1, 1941. They had one son, Larry Theadore Wilcken of Vernal.

Ted worked with his father's sheep during the early years of his marriage. The summer range was in the high Uintah Mountains, and he spent his summers in the Naturalist, Four Lake, and Granddaddy Basins of the High Uintahs.

Ted married Fern Boyette 22 years ago, and they shared their lives until Ted's death.

Ted was a hard worker and took pride in being able to outwork most of his compatriots. He liked to dance and enjoyed convivial company. He and his wife, Fern, were ever present at the Golden Age Center Friday night dances, until the past few months of his life. They stopped going when he announced that if he couldn't dance every dance, it was time to quit.

Ted loved horses. He was given one by his father at age 5, and he was never without a horse until he was in his advanced years. He used to love to team and chariot race.

Ted is survived by his wife, Fern; son, Larry; and four grandchildren: Kristi Kearl, of Dallas, TX, Erik Wilcken, of Salt Lake City, Pam Wilcken and Anne Wilcken, both of Logan.

Funeral services held at the Vernal 7th Ward, 850 West 100 North, on Nov. 22. Interment in the Roosevelt Memorial Park under the direction of the Hullinger Mortuary.
