Margaret Tompkins, was born 27 January 1812 in Carter County, Tennessee. Margaret and Benjamin M. Carson were married in Logan County, Kentucky on February 25, 1836. They were the parents of Benjamin, Reuben M. Carson, Nofflet Benjamin Carson, America Carson Baxter, and Mary A. Carson. After the death of her husband, Margaret met and married widower Alfred Hays on March 11, 1847 in Scotland County, Missouri. His children were: Mary, Martha and Franklin Hays.
Alfred and Margaret were the parents of Felix G. and Margaret Hays. Sometime between the 1850 and 1860 census, Alfred died leaving Margaret to care for their combined families. She continued living in Scotland County, Missouri where the family was listed on the 1860 census. Margaret and Felix were found in the small village of Terre Haute in Henderson County, Illinois on the 1870 census.
Felix G. and his mother Margaret moved to Buffalo County somewhere around 1876. Felix was in the grocery business in Kearney for a few years. They were living in Loup Township of Buffalo County where Felix was listed as a farmer on the 1880 census. This farm was about 2 miles northwest of the present village of Pleasanton. By the 1885 Nebraska state census, Margaret and Felix had expanded their sod house into a combination home and retail grocery store. This store served the settlers living in the area of Pleasant Valley before Pleasanton was organized in 1890.
Margaret died in 1888.
