Enlisted on Aug 15,1861 at Pittsburgh, PA. Was somehow able to hide his age and enlisted at 16 years of age. He mustered into Co "K" 102nd Pennsylvania Infantry. John was promoted to Sergeant on March 1, 1865. He was wounded in the "Third Battle of Petersburg" on April 2, 1865 and was still in the hospital on June 28, 1865 when his company mustered in Washington, DC. He was disappointed at the fact that he was unable to be present at General Lee's surrender.
