Classical scholar and educator. The second of three children of Walter Dabney Blair and Louisa Edmonia Wills Blair. His father was a prosperous merchant and social leader. His father's father was John Durburrow Blair, a noted minister. Walter graduated from Hampden-Sydney College, second in his class in 1855. He stayed on as an instuctor and became a professor of languages. In 1860 he took a leave of absence to study in Germany. He returned to Virginia in 1862 to join the Richmond Howitzers artillery unit engaging in the Civil War. He became a sergeant major and saw considerable action, but escaped injury. After the war he resumed teaching at Hampden-Sydney. He was a devoted instructor and published important works on the Latin language. Walter Blair was regarded by his acqauintances as a Virginia gentleman. He taught without interuption until 1896, when he retired because of failing eyesight. He moved with his family to Richmond in 1899.
