The funeral of Lewis E. Garey, 74, of Villisca, who died Thursday morning of last week was held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the home of her son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. F. Glen Garey on West Fourth Street, conducted by the Rev. L. B. Carpenter. Burial was in the Grant Cemetery.
The music was by J. S. Honeyman, accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Honeyman. Pall bearers were George Erickson, Austin Rusk, John Hutchinson, and A. E. Garey of Villisca and L. B. Fuller and Laf Patterson of Red Oak.
Mr. Garey was born January 18, 1862 at Tipton, Cedar County, Iowa and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Garey. At the age of 14, he moved with his parents to Montgomery County, Iowa where he resided continuously until his death.
He was married to Miss Cora B. Patterson of Grant, Iowa, on April 27, 1886 and their first home was 4 miles southwest of there. They moved to Villisca in 1912. To this union seven children were born, six of whom are living. They are Mrs. Ruby Straight, Glen and Don Garey of Villisca, Mrs. Mary Carmichael of Corning, Mrs. Hattie Chapman of Bridgewater, Iowa and Ray Garey of Elliott; one son, Urias died October 6, 1918.
Mr. Garey was a member of the Christian Church of Morton Mills and also of the Modern Woodmen of America. He and his wife celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on April 27, 1936 at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Carmichael.
Other than his wife and six children, Mr. Garey is survived by two brothers, Ellsworth of Villisca and Frank of Griswold and three sisters, Mrs. John Hutchinson and Mrs. George Erickson of Villisca and Mrs. Florence Rupp of Colby, Kansas.
The following relatives and friends were here from a distance to attend the funeral; L. B. Fuller and daughter, Miss Hattie, Mrs. Russel Heckert and son Robert, Mr. and Mrs. Laf Patterson and Mr. and Mrs. G. V. Patterson, Red Oak; Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hepler, Mrs. Nora Bacon, and Mrs. Blackburn, Grant; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Garey and Mr. and Mrs. Clark Garey of Griswold; and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Eden and daughter Margaret of Wiota, Iowa.
