Chester Marshall Dies Suddenly at His Home Friday
Stroke of Apoplexy Fatal to Muskingum College Professor

Chester J. Marshall, professor of classical language at Muskingum college for the past 20 years, died suddenly at his home in New Concord Friday noon of a stroke of apoplexy. He was 68 years of age.

Although Prof. Marshall had been in failing health for several weeks and had been given a leave of absence for the first semester due to his health, death was unexpected and came as a shock to his many friends and former students.

Prof. Marshall was the last of Muskingum college's old faculty. He died after more than 45 years of successful work in the teaching professions, 40 of which were in the college field and 35 at Muskingum.

He started his career at Muskingum in 1897 as professor of physics and chemistry. He was later made registrar and in 1916 he became professor of classical language.

He was the last of the faculty who witnessed the growth of the school from 200 students and two buildings to 800 students and a number of fine structures. Just before his death, he completed the work of compiling a history of the college for use in the centennial celebration at the college, starting next month.

Prof. Marshall was born in Guernsey county June 6, 1868, the son of Benjamin Marshall. He was a classmate of President Roosevelt at Harvard and attended the Roosevelt reunion in the White House in 1933. He received his M.A. degree from Muskingum and also studied at Columbia university.

Surviving are four children, Walter Marshall of Clarksburg, W.Va.; Mrs. William Abele of this city, Ralph Marshall, state representative, of New Concord, and Mary Francis Marshall of New Concord; three sisters, Mrs. Mary McCullough (sic s/b McCulloch) of New Concord, Mrs. Frank Wilson of Chase City, Va., and Mrs. Frank Dean of Pomona, Calif., and one brother, John Marshall, of New Concord.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Mock Funeral Home is in charge.
