A young Traer man, apparently depressed because of a broken romance, died about 3:45 a.m. in Schoitz Memorial hospital after several hours of brain surgery. He had been rushed to the hospital by Erickson ambulance with an attending physician after he was found in the garage on the Childs farm.
Mr. Childs discovered his son about 5:30 p. m. after hearing a shot fired. He found his son lying on the garage floor with a rifle at his side. Dr. Paul O 'Keefe, Black Hawk county medical examiner, who ruled the death a suicide, said one shot had been fired into the side of the head.
John Fredrick Childs was born here December 21, 1941 and was baptized in the Tranquillity Presbyterian church in 1944. He attended the rural Perry No. 5 school through the sixth grade, with Fannie Stevenson as his teacher. He then entered the Traer school where he was a member of the high school wrestling team. He was graduated in 1959. After graduation he worked on farms in the community and was also employed by Pemberton and Keil for a few months. He had been employed by Western Electric of Des Moines since the fall of 1960.
He is survived by his parents: three sisters, Dona Knapp of Waterloo, Gloria Peters of Cedar Rapids and Sandra at home; two brothers, Richard and Thomas, both at home; and a grandmother, Mrs. Lilly Bird of Irwin.
Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. Thursday in the Traer Methodist church, with the Rev. F. E. Flowers officiating. Mrs. Burdell Staker, soloist, was accompanied by Ruth Thomas organist. Pall bearers were Michael Richardson, Darrell Sivertsen, Ronnie Stuart, Jerry McAdoo, Ronnie Mason and Glen Jordan. In charge of flowers were Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Axler, Mr. and Mrs. John Wilimek. Burial was in Buckingham cemetery, near Traer.
