MRS MARGARET DOUGLAS DEAD: Passed Away at 11 O'clock This Morning After Brief Illness. At 11am this morning occurred the death of Mrs Margaret Douglas, widow of the late George Douglas, at her home, 500 First Ave, at the age of 76yrs Mrs. Douglas was in her usual health up to late Sunday, being able to attend services at the First Presbyterian Church of which she had long been an earnest & consistent member. After luncheon Sunday evening, Mrs. Douglas had the misfortune to fall part way down a flight of stairs, which accident resulted in a broken arm & paralysis of the lower extremeties, as well as a terrible shock, to which the immediate cause of death is attributed. The deceased was born at Stuartstown near Belfast, Ireland, and was married to Mr. George Douglas at Dixon, ILL in 1855. Mr Douglas was at that time engaged extensively in railroad contract work, which brought the family to Iowa, first to Dubuque, then to Waterloo, and finally to Cedar Rapids, in 1865, making their permanent home here. Mr. Douglas passed away in 1884, leaving a name forever identified with the material prosperity of the city. Mrs. Douglas is survived by 3 sons, George B, Walter D, & William W, the latter being abroad & Mr. Walter D, being in Oklahoma on business. She is also survived by 2 brothers. Notice of funeral arrangements will be made tomorrow. Mrs. Douglas was one of those noble, unselfish women whose name, with many others, will form a most interesting chapter in the early history of Cedar Rapids, for their interest in everything good - educational, religious, charitable & public-spirited. She will be especially well remembered by the older residents of the city to all of whom she was well known as a woman of gentle disposition, fine intelligence & remarkable force of character.
NOTE: A sister, Elizabeth Boyd Lathrop of MN, also survives. The 2 brothers that survive are William Orr Boyd of Ames, IA and Henry R. Boyd of Nevada City, IA. Preceding her in death were 3 sisters : Sarah Boyd Sharrar, Ellen Boyd McBride and Mary Boyd Kidd.
