James Edward Monroe died at the home of his son November 24 at the age of 85. Services were held at the Porter Funeral Home with Dr. L.R. Templin officiating. Burial was in the Sterling cemetery.

James Edward Monroe, son of Curtis and Sarah Monroe, was born, March 8, 1863, in Appanoose County, Iowa. He grew to manhood in that community and in 1881 was united in marriage with Mary Lydia Horn.

To them were born seven children of whom three died in infancy, and four - Gertrude, Cassie, Raymond, and Oscar grew to womanhood and manhood.

Mr. Monroe lived near the Iowa-Missouri line and for 23 years worked in the coal mines on the Missouri side. He came to Kansas in1903, settling first in Ellsworth County, and later came to Rice County. His life has been spent since that time in the communities of Little River and Geneseo until two years ago when he came to Sterling. He worked for 15 or more years on the Missouri-Pacific railroad after coming to Kansas. He passed away Nov. 24, 1948, at the age of 85 years, 8 months and 16 days.

He is survived by one son, Raymond of Sterling; 23 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; other more distant relatives.
