son of H.E. and A.M. Patterson

Henry Eugene Patterson was the infant son of Dr. Henry Eldorus Patterson (1860-1902) and Dr. Alice M. (Smith) Patterson, Shibley (1862-1928). He was the second of their two children, his older sister being Marian Lee (Patterson) Smith (1886-1954). Henry was born and died on the same date of May 15, 1893.

Henry Eugene's father was born in Kirksville, Adair County, Missouri and graduated from Dr. Andrew Taylor Still's American School of Osteopathy (ASO) in 1895. He served as the first secretary of the ASO.

Henry Eugene's mother was born Alice Mary Smith in 1862 and was a key figure in the early development of Osteopathy. She and Dr. Patterson were married December 31, 1884 in Kirksville, Adair County, Missouri. She had known Dr. Andrew Taylor Still (founder of Osteopathy) as her childhood family doctor. Both she and her husband enrolled in the first class of Dr. Still's American School of Osteopathy (ASO) in 1893, the year that Henry Eugene was born and died. At this time, Alice was already an educated woman, having graduated from the State Normal School in Kirksville. For three years following her graduation from the ASO in 1895, Alice took up several faculty positions at the ASO, including lecturer of obstetrics and gynecology, clinical instructor, and first assistant of the maternity hospital. She also contributed articles to the early Journal of Osteopathy and developed an osteopathic cure for gall stones. The Pattersons also had a private practice in Kirksville. Dr. Alice Patterson continued her education with a post-graduate degree from the ASO in 1897.

Aided by the endorsement of U. S. Senator Joseph Foraker, the Pattersons opened a highly successful practice in Washington, D.C. in about 1899. Henry died in 1902, but Alice continued to work as a physician for 25 more years, and kept the Patterson name for the rest of her life. From 1908 to 1916, she was married to George H. Shibley, a sociologist, writer, and D.O. During the time of their marriage, Alice changed her last name to Patterson-Shibley. When she left Dr. Shibley in 1916, she returned to the last name of Patterson. A wealthy socialite and a leader in the osteopathic movement, Alice served as the President of the District of Columbia Osteopathic Association for several years and became the first Vice President of the American Osteopathic Association in 1918. She died of heart failure in 1928, at the home of her daughter, Marion Lee (Patterson) Smith, in Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
