"Mrs. Bettie Chapman, wife of Simon Chapman who resides 3 miles northwest of town on M.S. Rhoads' farm, died very suddenly at 2 o'clock on last Monday morning. She was only sick about one week, and was not considered dangerously ill. Her ailment was Bright's disease. The deceased was 44 years, 4 months, and 2 days. She leaves a husband and 4 children. Funeral services were held at her late residence at 10 o'clock yesterday morning, after which her remains were taken to Eugene and interred in the cemetery at that place." - Newport Hoosier State, Wednesday, July 11, 1900
