Francis Bernard McDermott was born on April 5, 1838 in Prairie Creek Township in Dubuque County, Iowa. He was the son of James C. McDermott and Priscilla Lendeman. Francis had a twin brother, Edward T. McDermott.

Francis married Honora Dunn on February 11, 1866 at St. John's Catholic Church in Placid, Iowa. They were the parents of ten children - Priscilla, John P., Francis B., Catherine Ann, James C., Maria E., Michael M., Daniel A., William J., and Thomas.

Francis was a farmer and was very interested in politics. Francis also played a roll in the location of St. John's Catholic Church at Placid. Francis died at his home near Placid on December 31, 1902.
