From Holland St. John - "My 3rd-great grandfather Daniel was the son of Andrew Lucas Sr, by his second wife Esther McCrillis (Pennell) Lucas. He was born at Colrain, Franklin County, Massachusetts on February 7, 1762. Daniel was a half-brother to Andrew Lucas Jr and also to Archibald Jr., Isaac, Sarah and Esther Pennell. He spent his boyhood and early manhood at Colrain on the family farm. Daniel was a Revolutionary soldier. He enlised July 13, 1780 and was discharged October 10, 1780. He was described: "age 18 years; stature 5 ft. 10 in.; complexion light; hair brown; eyes, light; engaged for town of Colrain; term 3 months." There is some evidence that he may have served two years, perhaps in Connecticut. At the age of twenty-four he married Martha Brown in 1786. She was from Blandford, Hampden County, Massachusetts. She was born May 25, 1762. Their intention to marry was published September 20, 1785. Daniel's sister Hannah Lucas, married William Brown, brother of Martha. The couple had nine children: William (born February 17, 1787), Andrew (born January 11, 1789), Margaret (born May 24, 1791), Elmena, Caroline, Amanda (born October 5, 1799, my great-great grandmother), Daniel Jr, Archibald (born 1804) and Eleanor. Some of Daniel's children were born at Colrain; however, he later went to Stockbridge, eight miles from Cazenovia, Madison County, New York. The family lived there from ten to fifteen years. From there he moved to Conquest, Cayuga County, New York. During the War of 1812 the firing of the guns near Lake Erie could be heard at his home. He took his old flintlock and walked eighteen miles to volunteer his services, but before he reached his destination, the battle was ended. At the age of seventy- three in September of 1835 he went with his daughter Amanda and her family to Washtenaw County, Michigan. Daniel died in Bridgewater Township, Washtenaw County, Michigan and was buried wrapped in a winding sheet on Humphrey's Farm, about ten miles southwest of Ann Arbor, Michigan in November of 1838. He was in his 77th year at the time of his death. His wife Martha died in Cato, New York in April of 1832. Place of her interment has not been identified."
