According to the newspaper, 'Clarkesville Times, Vol. XXXVI, Issue No. 9, 31 Jan 1908', Page 3, "Andy Underwood, 72 years old, died at the home of his son, A.J. Underwood, yesterday and will be buried at Stone's Chapel today."
For many years, there has been a controversy as to what is Andrew's middle name? Thomas or James? After a careful study, research has concluded that Andy's middle name must have been Thomas. In comparing all the census records, his marriage record and tax rolls, it appears that not one record reflects the middle initial J, but all of the records show the middle initial T, which confirms it being for Thomas. Upon occasion the script written T and J have been mistaken for one another.
It also has been confirmed by the Clarkesville Times Newspaper that Andrew was in fact buried in Stone's Chapel near to Old Cherry Community, where he once resided and farmed. He is buried near the Underwood section of the Cemetery, near to many of his descendants and family members.
Andrew 'Andy' T. Underwood also was a Confederate soldier, who enlisted 4 Nov 1862, Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, TN., and served with Co. E. of the Tennessee 45th Infantry Regiment and later in the 59th Mountry Infantry of Cook's Regiment Eakins's Battery, rank Private.
In July 2022, Andrew T. was duly honored with his grave being marked with his long deserved CSA Military headstone provided by the Veterans Dept. His application and research was completed and the headstone was installed by his third great-grandson Shawn Tully and twice great-grandson Sam Orsak.
