MRS. JOHN O'KEEFE, LONG A PROMINENT RESIDENT PASSES AWAY; RITES TUESDAY
Mrs. Cora E. O'Keefe, 80, prominent Carthage resident and widow of John E. O'Keefe, for many years one of Carthage's leading citizens, passed away at 4:45 a.m. yesterday at the family home, 1401 South Garrison.
She had been in failing health five years and last week her condition became more serious.
Born January 1, 1883 in St. Louis, Mrs. O'Keefe came to Carthage 63 years ago with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Beneke. The family resided in Clinton, Missouri prior to moving here.
Mr. and Mrs. O'Keefe were married on October 19, 1904 in Carthage. Mr. O'Keefe, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene O'Keefe, prominent pioneer residents, was in the quarry business here, selling his interests at the time the quarries consolidated and became the Carthage Marble Corporation.
Mr. O'Keefe also was a civic leader here.
He died June 13, 1952 in McCune-Brooks Hospital following an extended illness.
Mrs. O'Keefe was a communicant of Grace Episcopal Church and was a member of the Junior Shakespeare Society, now disbanded.
Surviving Mrs. O'Keefe are a daughter, Mrs. George Phelps, 1601 Grand Avenue
a sister; Miss Alice Beneke, who made her home with Mrs. O'Keefe
four grandchildren;

Maynard Durham, 418 Belle Air Place is a nephew.
A son, John O'Keefe, Jr. drowned September 18, 1943 at Trinidad while serving with the the U. S. Navy on a mission in the Caribbean.
George Phelps, Jr. and Lt. and Mrs. John Phelps arrived here yesterday and Miss Sheila O'Keefe came today.
A brother, Frederick Beneke preceeded Mrs. O'Keefe in death. Mr. Beneke, who at one time was on the editorial staff of the Memphis Commercial Appeal, started his newspaper career, on THE PRESS. He was with the Springfield Republican prior to going to Memphis.
Funeral services were held at Grace Episcopal Church

Burial was in the O'Keefe family plot at Park Cemetery

A picnic and a dance were given last night at
Lakeside by Miss Marie Davey for her guest, Miss Florence Boyce of Brooklyn. The invited guests were:

Entertained Club and Guests.
Mr. and Mrs. L. S. Durham entertained the Matrimonial club and a number of invited guests in a most delightful manner at their pretty home on south Main street last night. Bid euchre was the feature of the evening, Mrs. W. S. Crane and F. W. Steadley proving most proficient and winning the ribbons.
At 10:30 a dainty lunch was served at the card tables.
Those present besides club members were Messrs. and Mesdames W. S. Crane, F. W. Steadley, W. K. Caffee, A. F. Beneke, Paul Davey, Capt. A. B. Deutsch, Mrs. C. W. Rinehart, Misses Cora and Alice Beneke.
A graphophone added to the pleasure of the evening, with music and amusing speeches.

Evening of Thursday, June 7 1934 at Carthage, Missouri's Drake hotel, Cora and hubby John were on the fifty one member reception committee to welcome their friends of over forty years, Colonel Carl Raymond and wife Harriette (Flora) Gray to Carthage Homecoming.
