The scion of a prominent New York family, George Martin was the ninth of eleven children born to Enos T. Martin, a successful attorney and journalist, and the former Cornelia Williams, a mercantile heiress. He was raised in the stimulating atmosphere of "Willowbrook", the Throop-Martin estate on Auburn's Lake Owasco, where his parents and grand-uncle, former New York Governor Enos Thompson Throop, regularly hosted celebrated visitors. George became a merchant and moved to Albany in 1870, where he was also active in the newspaper business. Years later, when his health began to decline, he returned to Willowbrook, where he died in 1928 at the age of 76. His survivors included his younger brother, the noted writer Edward S.
