George Abner Burks was the 6th of 16 children born to Henry and Elizabeth (Shields) Burks. His paternal grandparents were Elisha & Patience (Dunston) Burks. Elisha was the son of William Burks Sr and Patience was the daughter of William Dunston, a Revolutionary Soldier from NC. His maternal grandfather is believed to be Moses Shields who died about 1842 in Spartanburg Co SC. A brother of his mother is believed to be Henry Wells Shields.

Abner Burks, Pvt Co E 56th Reg GA, appears on a register of 1st Mississippi CSA Hospital, Jackson, Mississippi. Complaint - Pneumonia, admitted - 24 Jan 1863, sent to General Hospital 14 Feb 1863, Remarks - Vaccinated Newton Station, signed - J Funk. Muster Roll of 31 Oct 1863 shows him absent with the comment "Deranged and left at Vicksburg 12 July 1863."
On 22 Sept 1863, Nancy E Burk filed a claim with the CSA War Dept for Abner's "death" at Vicksburg, alleged to have occurred on 5 Jul 1863. However, it turned out that he was not deceased, but probably making his way home. Family lore gives that he walked from Vicksburg to Stockbridge GA.
