John H. Bock Was Suddenly Summoned Thursday Night
John H. Bock, pioneer resident of this community passed away at this home on East Third street Thursday evening of last week shortly after the hour of eight o’clock, death being caused from a heart attack.
While his health for the past four months had not been of the best, immediate members of the family did not anticipate the danger of his sudden demise, and news of his death came as a great shock to members of the family and to intimate friends.
Thursday the deceased spent considerable time up town transacting business and had worked about his home, not once complaining of feeling at all ill or indisposed. After eating a hearty supper he repaired to the porch as was his usual custom to take a nap. A short time later Mrs. Bock was attracted to his side by peculiar sounds and discovered that he had passed to the great beyond.
John H. Bock was born in Missouri, July 13, 1851 and when a boy of four years immigrated with his parents to Richmond, Stearns county.
In 1877 he was united in holy wedlock to Mary Ann Cody, and in ’81 they moved to S;ring Hill at which place the deceased served as postmaster for twelve years. In 1901 Mr. and Mrs. Bock moved to Sauk Centre where they have since made their home.
The death of this worthy citizen is the closing chapter of the original Bock family, he being the youngest and last survivor; he will be missed most by those who knew him best.
Besides the wife, the deceased leaves to mourn his loss, six children, as follows: John E. Bick, Mitchell, S. D.; F. E. Bock, Breckenridge, Minn.; W. D. Bock, Mazenod, Sask., Canada; Mrs. Leo F. McDonough, Dubuque, Iowa; Mrs. Henry Hoeschen, Seattle, Wash.; Arnold Bock o fMazenod, Sask., Canada. All the children except the two later mentioned were present at the funeral, they being unable to attend. Other relatives from out of town attending were: Lawrence Bock, a grandson from Breckenridge, Minn.; John Cody, Humbolt, Sask., Canada; brother of Mrs. Bock; Mrs. P. J. Flynn, Logan, Mont., sister of Mrs. Bock; also three nephews namely: William Bock, Foxholm, N. D.; Gerhard Bruning, St. Cloud; Frank Bock, Albany; Miss Elizabeth Bock, Mr. and Mrs. Barney Luck and Peter Backus, all of Richmond, Minn.
Funeral services were conducted at St. Paul’s Catholic church Monday morning, Fr. A. Arzt speaking Mass and conducting German services, assisted by Fr. John A. Fearon who delivered the English sermon and conducted the services at the grave. The remains were laid to rest in the Irish Catholic cemetery.
