Coroner W.L. Dragoo said the man, who had been in ill health, ended his life by shooting himself. He was found by his wife, Jane S. Cook, who told the coroner that she returned to the house after feeding chickens and found her husband dead.
He was a member of Sangamon lodge No. 6, I.O.O.F.
In addition to this wife, he is survived by six sons, James H., of Hallsville, Mo.; Arthur H., of Williamsville; Jesse A., Thomas F., David E. and Robert O. Cook, all of Springfield; stepson, E.C. Staley, of St. Louis; daughter, Mrs. Delphia Manley; and two stepdaughters, Mrs. Belle Kelly and Mrs. Anna McDaniels, all of Springfield; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Ellinger & Kunz funeral home.
Burial was in Mechanicsburg cemetery. Member of the Odd Fellows lodge conducted rites.
