Getty was one of the three daughters of Abraham Carroll, who with his parents and siblings left the Mohawk Valley, New York, and settled in Oxford Upon Thames, Oxford County, Ontario, in 1800. The name of Getty's mother is Ruth Piper (or a sister of Ruth's) whose father Caleb, originally from Templeton, Massachusetts, settled in Oxford County in 1797. In 1827, Abraham Carroll located in what is today London, Ontario, where he kept the first hotel "worthy of the name" with the help of Getty and her sisters Maria and Melinda.

Getty married John B. Fitch 15 November 1827, in St. Thomas, Ontario. They lived for the first few years of their marriage in Middlesex County and nearby St. Thomas, where John was a tanner and also in the wool carding business. By 1835 they were living in Chautauqua County, New York, where they are found in Pomfret in the 1840 Federal Census. They relocated to Columbia County, Wisconsin, by 1846.

Getty was the mother of eight children:

Chidlren Lydia, George and John died in August 1851 in Lewiston Township, Columbia County, Wisconsin, two months before their mother's death.
