He grew up in Canton and was a graduate of Canton High School, where he went on to attend Texas A&M before returning to Canton to work at the Post Office for five years.
He entered the US Navy during WW II and served in the Postal Service and was honorably discharged in 1945 having been stationed in Alaska, Saipan, and Okinawa.
Joe moved to Tyler in 1946 where he began working for his brother at the Mac Ashworth Used Cars car lot.
After Mac's death, Joe purchased the business and operated the car lot from 1981 to his retirement in 1987.
Joe was a member of the Marvin United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Friendly Bible class, welcome and visitation group, usher for the early service, and a past member of the Board of Stewards.
He was a charter member of the Tyler Auto Christian Fellowship, which is now called the Sonrise Prayer Breakfast, a non-profit organization, and was a Mason and Shriner.
Joe is also preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy Mae Ashworth; step-son, George Lilienstern, III; 6 brothers, Alton William Ashworth, Guy Ashworth, John Mac Ashworth, Charles Wesley Ashworth, Jr., Jack Clifford Ashworth, and Woodrow Wilson Ashworth; and 3 sisters, Arlou, Beula and Hazel.
Survivors are his daughter, of Ft. Worth; grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; sisters, daughter-in-law, of Tyler; brother-in-law, of Tyler; sister-in-law, Frances of Dallas; several nieces and nephews.
