Miles was the son of John H. Baum and Catherine Keith. He was married twice:
1. to Clara Belle Helsel on October 13, 1897 in Coalport, Clearfield Co., PA (marriage license filed in Cambria Co.). She died in 1936.
2. to Myrtle Jane (Palmer) Baum on July 10, 1948 in Clymer, Indiana Co., PA.

The following obituary appeared in "The Progress" (Clearfield, PA) on Saturday, June 17, 1961, page 12, column 7:

COALPORT — Miles Baum, 83, of Coalport died yesterday in the Philipsburg State Hospital following an extended illness.

He was born in Susquehanna Township on March 26, 1878 , a son of the late Miles [sic] and Catherine (Keith) Baum.

Surviving are his wife, Myrtle (Palmer) Baum, six children: Mrs. Mae Good and Mrs. Grace Wissinger, both of Coalport; Mrs. Mary Shrock, Blain City ; Clarence Baum, Rosebud; George Baum, Lylevllle; and Mrs. Dessie Irvin, Altoona; nine stepchildren: James, Blaine, both of Indiana; Berton, Penn Run, Kenneth, Altman; Dean, Kittanning; Arthur, Greensburg; Edward, Latrobe; Howard, Salina; and Carl, Columbus, Ohio.

Three stepbrothers, Edward, Hastings; Albert, Emeigh; and Christopher, Johnstown; 30 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Clara Belle (Helsel) Baum.

Mr. Baum was a member of United Mine Workers of America 1402 of Coalport.

Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday with the Rev. E. R. Raycroft, pastor of the Coalport Methodist Church, officiating.

Friends may call at the Greinader Funeral Home, Coalport, today after 4 p. m., tomorrow and until time of service Monday. Burial will be in Beaver Valley Cemetery.
