Obituary from the "Headlight" of Deming, New Mexico dated 22 Oct 2001:
Joy Heacox
Joy Darlene (Dana) Heacox died October 19, 2001, in Deming, in the Mimbres Valley Hospice Care program at the Mimbres Memorial Nursing Home, just six days short of the age of 90.
Joy Heacox was born on Oct. 25, 1911 in Terrill, Iowa, of Earl and Olive Dana. She was raised mostly in Britt, Iowa. She was a graduate of Boscobel High School, Class of 1928. She attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison only briefly as a result of the Great Depression. She graduated from the Kahler School of Nursing associated with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. in 1932, with her certificate dated Jan. 26, 1933 and was a practicing registered nurse.
She married Maynard Heacox of Britt, Iowa, Aug. 10, 1935 and was married to him for some 52 years before his passing in 1987. For most of their early married life they lived in Anderson, Indiana. They had three sons there: Dana who died shortly after birth in 1938; Donald, who survives, in 1940; and Lucian in 1943, who was killed in a traffic accident in Chicago in 1984.
Joy started a successful business called Central Billing Service and ran it for several years. When Maynard took a job in Chicago, they moved to Hammond, Indiana in 1957 so that Joy could maintain her business. She closed the business when they moved to Chicago a few years later and returned to nursing. She was a nurse at the clinic for nurse trainees at Michael Reese Hospital and also was a company nurse for the Chicago Tribune newspaper.
When Maynard retired from the American Medical Association, they moved to Boscobel and were active in the community for many years. Joy served on the Grant County Commission for Aging and in other capacities. She was active in a variety of churches over the years, most notably the (Methodist) Chicago Temple and Boscobel's First Congregational Church. She was active in the League of Women Voters and a variety of other organizations.
She is survived by many friends and by her son, Don and his wife Suzanne of Deming, New Mexico, where she came to live on July 4, 1998. She is also survived by Don and Suzanne's son, Dana, and his wife Ma eva and daughters Juliette and Brisa of Belize, Central America, and by Don and Suzanne's daughters, Renee Rivera of Deming and Stacy Heacox attending Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher, Arizona. She is also survived by a daughter of Lucian, Catherine Heacox of New York City. She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons, older sister, and two younger brothers.
She enjoyed family and friends, church and community activities, nursing and business, swimming and tennis, and a variety of card games. Her strong and inspiring spirit endures.
A burial service will be held in Boscobel, Wis., the afternoon of Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001. A Memorial service will be conducted at a later date at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Deming.
