In 1633, James Barber (1588-1648), his wife, Unknown (Wife) Barber (1600-16??), and their three (3) sons, William b. 1619, James b. 1620, Joseph b. 1626, and three (3) daughters, Mary b. 1618, Elizabeth b. 1624, and Patience b. 1628, emigrated from England to the harbor area of Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1635 the family moved from Massachustees Bay Colony to the area of the future Town of Newport on Acquidneck Island in the future Rhode Island & Providence Plantations.
