GRACIE ETHEL BODKINS CHANNELL, age 89 years, a resident of Valley Head, West Virginia, departed this life Monday evening, May 5, 2003 at her home. She had been in declining health for the past 17 years, and death was attributed to complications from Alzheimer�s Disease.
She was born Saturday, May 2, 1914, at Rich Mountain near Harman, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Isaac Luther Bodkins and Savannah Cunningham Bodkins. On May 2, 1929 at Elkins, she was married to Dorfice Andrew Channell who preceded her in death June 30, 2001.
Surviving her are seven sons, Andrew Channell, and wife, Lovie, Orland Park, Illinois, Denzil Channell, and wife, Janet, Troy, Maine, Don Channell, and wife Natalie, and Robert Channell, and wife, Rosalie, all of Parksley, Virginia, Gerald Channell, and wife, Rhonda, Valley Head, West Virginia, Stephen Channell, and wife, Faye, Elkins, West Virginia, and Randall Channell, and wife, Chris, Mentor, Ohio; seven daughters, Helen Warner, Franklin, West Virginia, Mrs. Arvil (Ruth) Burris, Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. Jonathan (Evelyn) Kronk, Sarasota, Florida, Mrs. Oscar (Deloris) Masiers, Snellville, Georgia, Mrs. Alfred (Sandy) Sheats, Bear, Delaware, Mrs. David (Linda) Hamrick, and Debbie Channell, all of Valley Head, West Virginia; 47 grandchildren, 71 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Ida Bodkins, Myrtie Hinkle, and Vista Sponaugle; seven brothers, Nathan, Ed, Herbert, Teddy, Fred, Willie, and Baxter Bodkins; two grandsons, Gary Warner, and Jimmy Burris; and one great granddaughter, Cheyenne Brooke Hamrick. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She attended the schools of Randolph County. As a homemaker, she was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and was a Methodist by faith.
Friends will be received at the Valley Head United Methodist Church on Friday from 6 to 9 PM. Final Rites will be conducted on Saturday at 11:00 AM at the church. The Rev. Robert L. Baer will officiate, and interment will follow in the Valley Head Cemetery at Valley Head, West Virginia.
