Robert J. Matheson, 75, pioneer citizen of Reinbeck and community, died at St. Francis hospital in Waterloo Sunday morning last. He had been in failing health for some months and was taken to the hospital four weeks ago, suffering with carcinoma, which caused his death. Mr. Matheson was born January 12, 1865 at Embro, Ontario, Canada, of Scotch descent, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Matheson. When 4 years of age, he came with his parents to Tama county, where he grew to manhood in the Amity church neighborhood, in Grant township. For many years he farmed the old Matheson homestead, two miles west of Amity church, until 1920, when he moved to a farm one-half mile east of Reinbeck where he had been operating a dairy for a number of years.
On February 16, 1893, he was married to Nettie D. Weir, who died February 10, 1900. One son, Thomson Matheson, of Garwin, survives. On January 20, 1904 he was married to Miss Anna Stelk, of Gladbrook, who with one son, James B. Matheson, living east of Reinbeck survives. A brother, Dr. G. A Matheson, lives in Des Moines.
When living in the Amity neighborhood, Mr. Matheson served as township clerk of Grant township many years. He was a member of the Amity United Presbyterian church and served as congregational treasurer. When the present Amity church building was erected twenty-five years ago, he was a member of the building committee. Moving to the farm just east of Reinbeck twenty years ago, he became a member of the Reinbeck United Presbyterian church, and was ordained an elder in that church, serving in that capacity for a number of years. He served several years as a director of the Reinbeck consolidated school district.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the family residence at 1:30 p.m. and at the Reinbeck United Presbyterian church at 2 o'clock. The rev. s. Fred Sharpe, pastor was in charge, assisted by the Rev. C. Haupt of Amity and the Rev. W. C. Porter of Waterloo. Burial was in Amity cemetery.
