He was the son of Robert Arnold and Elizabeth Marion Newell Arnold. His mother died in 1823 and his father married Piercy Hamblin on March 4, 1824.

He married Caroline Scholl on July 20, 1843 in Callaway County, MO. They were the parents of Sarah Ellen, Joseph Taylor, Giles Jones, Emily Ann, William, Mary Belle, John Pleasant and Nettie Charles.
