Harstine Island Shocked as Death, Murder Pay Visit
Paragraph 3
The saddest event of the week was the death Monday Night at the Shelton hospital of John Buffington, one of the island’s oldest settlers. Mr. Buffington has not been in good health for the past year, and last Sunday was taken to the hospital with a “Stroke.”
Funeral to be at Ballow Cemetery Saturday at 11 a.m.
Born in the state of Iowa, Mr. Buffington came to Washington Fifty-three years ago and soon after settled on Harstine Island, where with his wife, he has lived ever since. An only Son, Robert preceded Mr. Buffington in death, having contracted typhoid fever while on a camping trip in 1916, from which he failed to recover.

During the active portion of his life, Mr. Buffington owned and operated a saw-mill on his property at Ballow, and furnished much of the lumber from which a number of the island homes were built, also cut and shipped a considerable amount, the logs being taken off his own heavily-wooded holdings on the island. After retiring from such strenuous work, Mr. Buffington farmed a part of his place, gaining for himself a high standing among the county’s gardeners for producing products of superior quality and appearance.

Island people will miss Mr. Buffington and their sympathy goes to his beloved wife, Harriet of the home here .
