In 1860, he was a farmer living in Cumberland Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 9" tall with dark hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chambersburg April 7, 1865, as a substitute for Henry Benner and mustered into federal service there that same day as a private with Co. C, 98th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 29, 1865.

He left the Gettysburg area for Illinois in 1885 and there died at age 76-11-14.
