Herbert "Herb" Marshal Dukes, 97 of Yuba City, California went home to be with
the Lord, Sept. 12, 2011 at Rideout Medical Center in Marysville, California.
He was born to parents, Sylvester and Ethel Dukes on June 21, 1914 in the
township of Lindsey in Benton County, Missouri. He and his parents moved to
Gridley when he was a small boy, where they became long-time peach and walnut
farmers. In 1934, after leaving the family farm, he joined the Civil
Conservation Corp and worked as an equipment mechanic. Later, Herb joined the
workforce at Libby McNeil and Libby, where he was a dedicated employee for 40+
years until his retirement in the early 70's. He was a good farmer and rancher
and always provided for his family. His real passion was fishing, which he
shared with friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jewel, along with his brothers,
Harold, Pat, Bill and his sister, Mary.
Herb shared his life and love with his two daughters and their husbands: Joyce
and Jim Sharp of Yuba City, CA and Naomi and Billy Shadwick of Alsea, OR. He is
also survived by three granddaughters: Stephanie Le Jeune and Stacy Brown of
Seattle, WA area; and Amanda Glines and husband, Bruce from Gridley, CA. His
four great-grandchildren remember him as big and strong Grandpa Dukes who always
had a smile for them; and numerous nieces and nephews, plus friends from his
residence at The Fountains in Yuba City, CA.
