COLUMBUS GEORGE METCALF

Columbus George Metcalf, 79, of 1043 Patton Avenue, Asheville, N.C. died Wednesday, October 30, 1968 at his home after a long illness.

He was a native of Madison County, N.C. and had lived in Asheville for the past 49 years. He was engaged in the grocery business in Asheville for 30 years, retiring in 1949.

Mr. Metcalf was a deacon of Calvary Baptist Church and taught a junior boys Sunday School class for 20 years.

He was survived by his wife, Pearl Duck Metcalf; a daughter, Mrs. M.M. Riley of Chesapeake, Virginia; two sons, Dr. Lawrence Edward Metcalf of Asheville, N.C. and Dr. Charles George Metcalf of Cherryville, N.C.; a sister, Mrs. George Swengel of Wayne, Michigan; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, September 1, 1968 in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home. The Rev. John H. Knight officiated. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Irby Stevens, Dr. Oscar Brazil, Michael Kelcher, Dr. Charles Cummings, Eddie Joiner, Lee Gardner, Paul Phillips, William Soderquist, Charles Vance, deacons of the church and former members of the junior boys Sunday School class of the church. Burial was in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
