J.C. Cunningham was son of David Cunningham and Jane Tucker of McNairy Co., TN. He was a resident of Noble, Texas for 20 years and then a resident of Cunningham, Texas for the last 20 years of his life and died at his son's home. (His son, Samuel A. Cunningham founded Cunningham, Tx.) John served thin the Confederate Army during the Civil Way, serving inder General Forrest. Since then he was engaged in farming and stock raising. Preceded in death by 20 years by his wife, Edith Martin-Cunningham. They had two sons, Samuel A. Cunningham and Edgar W. Cunningham, both of Cunningham, Texas; and a daughter Mrs. Evah Durant Nelson of Miami, Texas. John donated the land for Hickory Grove Cemetery up to the 1st driveway.
