San Juan county residents were saddened by the death Friday of a longtime Aztec citizen, Robert L. Maddox. Moving with his family to Aztec in 1904, Mr. Maddox lived in that community most of his 83 years. An engineer, he also operated a grocery business in Aztec before his retirement. Mr. Maddox was a member of the Aqualantes, a group formed in the early 1950s which was instrumental in gaining Congressional approval for the construction of Navajo Dam. He was a member of US Highway 64 Association which successfully ramrodded the construction of an all-weather scenic route across northern New Mexico. A former Chairman of the San Juan Democratic Party, Mr. Maddox was able to set party affiliations aside in working for what he considered to be the best interests of the community. Mr. Maddox was a member of the Presbyterian Church and was active in Masonic organizations. Those who knew him well say, "He was congenial -- so easy to get along with." We and other residents of San Juan County extend our condolences to his family.
