In the morning of January 21, John L. Ballou Jr. passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family. He was born October 20, 1922 in Indianola, Nebraska to John Loy Ballou, Sr. and Helen Althea Colling Ballou. He married June Egbert April 1, 1949.

He earned a degree in aeronautical engineering from Utah State University and spent 40 years in the heavy implement, steel, and construction business. As one of the "greatest generation," he proudly served his country in the Pacific Theater in World War II.

Dad loved the simple things in life, spending time with his family and friends, trips to Nebraska where he was raised, to visit and hunt with family. His passion was work, and he instilled that concept into his children. Dad taught us how to work, but we learned how to play all by ourselves. His wit and humor was legendary - especially his sayings. He seemed to have one for every occasion. Dad was wise and honest. Never can there be found a person who was ever cheated by John L. Ballou. He said, "Deal off the top of the deck, tell the truth and you never have to worry about covering your tracks."

He was a devoted father and husband and always cared for and supported Mom. He especially loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always had a treat for them. Dad was especially tender to older people and those who could not help themselves.

John is survived by his wife, June E. Ballou; children, Rex E. Ballou (Shauna), Robert L. Ballou (Trenna), Patty Ballou Houston, Michael L. Ballou (Nancy), and Tom E. Ballou (Connie); 18 grandchildren; seven great-grand-children; and sisters, Ruth Ballou Pratt (Clifford), Mary Lynne Ballou Court-right (Clarence).

He is preceded in death by father, John L. Ballou Sr.; mother, Helen Ballou; brothers, Charles Ballou, Roger Ballou; and great-granddaughter, River May Ballou.

Dad always had a special part of his heart reserved for his only daughter, Patty. She has devoted much time and energy assisting in Mom and Dad's twilight years. Her brothers and the rest of the family are eternally grateful for her and her service to her Dad.

Funeral services will be held 12 noon Tuesday, January 24, 2006 at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley, 1007 South Jordan Parkway (10600 South) in South Jordan. A viewing will be held one hour prior to services where friends and family may call.
