Alfred B Wahlen, Leading Business Man, Summoned

Passed Away Suddenly After Short Illness; Wife Died Febr 5

It is with a tear of sadness that we bow our head and mourn the passing of a good friend, Alfred Wahlen. The community will miss his going. Highly respected as a citizen and as a business man the circle of his acquaintance will feel keenly his demise. He always maintained a p**nthropic spirit. He loved his friends and they in turn loved and adored him. In every movement for community good he stood out in front. Silent but deep flowed the life stream of a sympathetic heart. In his last bereavement his trials were borne with the quiet spirit of one who knew those of others. And so closes the chapter of a man whom we all loved. His acquaintance was large and his friendships as large and binding.

His death came just thirteen days after the death of his wife. Grief stricken by her going his broken heart was unable to continue the battle for life. He had been confined to his home and bed for a week, his death coming Saturday night at 10:40.

Mr. Wahlen was apparently getting along well as he was feeling all right and had a normal temperature. However, in the evening his heart showed signs of weakness and nothing could he done that seemed effective in preventing a rapid turn for the worse.

Alfred B. Wahlen, the son of Henry and Emma Wahlen was born in Altenbruch, Hanover County, Germany, on December 20, 1873 and died at his home near Edgar, Nebraska, February 18, 1933 at the age of 59 years, 1 month and 28 days, after a brief illness of two weeks.

He came to America when 16 years of age and worked in New York City for two years and in 1892 he came to Sedan, Nebraska. On February 9, 1898, he was united in marriage to Miss Minna Johanna Augusta Kiel at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Holtz. Three sons were born to this union, all of whom have preceded him in death; Ernest in 1905, Alfred on March 24, 1919 and August on March 23, 1930. His beloved wife also preceded him on February 5, 1933, just two weeks ago.

Two years after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Wahlen bought a farm near Edgar, Nebraska, where they resided the remainder of their lives.

Mr. Wahlen as a very good provider, and it was his chief delight to improve his farm home and make it a real happy home for his family and to bring cheer and happiness to those in need.

He was a very successful business man. Twenty-five years ago he started a produce business on a small scale by raising the produce on his own farm and selling it. This business grew from year to year, so that in later years he bought produce by carloads and retailed by truckloads, so that the firm became known as The Wahlen Produce Co., which delivered goods to some 72 towns. The company has handled 160 carloads of produce per year.

The community has lost a valuable citizen and business man, who was broadminded, public spirited and in a very quiet manner helped with relief work.

He was confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Germany when a boy.

He leaves to mourn but few relatives in this country, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Margaret Wahlen, and daughter, Amanda, of Davenport, a nephew, Henry Wahlen and wife living near Edgar, Nebr. A brother, John Wahlen died Oct 27, 1905. Three brothers, three sisters and several nephews and nieces, living in Germany are left to mourn his death.

Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church Wednesday, February 22, 1933, at 2:00 p.m. Rev T. S. Hughes officiated. The male quartet consisting of Messrs. C. S. Voorhees, J. M. McGhie, W. R. Nicholls and J. Robt. Olseene sang the same songs that were sung at Mrs. Wahlen's funeral, and Mrs. Hughes sang a solo, as before.

The pallbearers were Will Ahrens, Pete Sigman, Fritz Goesch, Edgar Organ, George Thomas, and O. J. Shipley.

He was laid to rest by the side of his wife and sons in the Edgar Cemetery.
