Rita Morton, 94, of Elk Horn, IA, formerly of Griswold, died Monday evening, December 21, 2009, at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn where she has been a resident.

Rita Della Knapp was born on March 7, 1915 at O'Neill, NE, the daughter of Lewis and Rena Belle (Reece) Knapp. Rita's parents died when she was 13 years old and then her older sisters raised her. She graduated from O'Neill High School in 1933 and on October 10, 1935 she married Harry Winfred Morton at O'Neill and she came to Griswold where they farmed. Harry died October 12, 1979 and after that Rita moved to town in the late 1990's. She became a resident of Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, IA nearly 4 years ago. Rita was a member of the Griswold United Methodist Church and had been a member of several other organizations and neighborhood clubs.

Survivors include her children Scott (Bonnie) Morton of Charlottesville, VA, and Sue (John) Andersen of Elk Horn, IA; her granddaughters Julie (the late Frank) Snyder of Stanton, IA, April (Jim) Forsythe of San Rafael, CA, and Amy "Brooke" (Bryon) Inman of Mason City, IA; and her great-grandchildren Holly Snyder of Chariton, IA, Cody Snyder of Red Oak, IA, Curtis and Ashley Inman of Mason City and Alexander Forsythe of San Rafael. Also surviving are 5 step grandchildren and 10 step great-grandchildren.

Rita's parents, husband, and grandson-in-law preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were her brothers and sisters; Roy Knapp, Leonard Knapp, Emma Pierson, Lola Hungarford, Ruby Morton, Mary Widtfeldt, Anita Morton, Agnes Morton, Helen Haszard and Etta Belle Duggar.

Funeral services will be on Friday, January 8, 2010 at 11:30 AM at the Griswold United Methodist Church, Pastor Leila Blackburn officiating. Burial will be in the Whipple Cemetery.
