Thomas Heathcote

Thomas "Tom" Burdell Heathcote, 83, of Indian Head, formerly of Weston, died of cancer July 20, 2004, at his residence. He was born October 9, 1921, [headstone date is Oct 21, 1921 ] in Morgantown. On October 27, 1941, he married Mary C. Heathcote, who preceded him in death June 9, 2002. He is survived by his 3 daughters; a sister, Ellen Hamblin and husband, Jim, of Charleston; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Heathcote received a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from W.Va. Wesleyan College. His post-graduate work was done at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was employed as a physicist with the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in White Oak. After his retirement, he taught weight-lifting classes at the College of Southern Md. Mr. Heathcote was a W.W.II veteran. He was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard and served from 1942-45. He was an underwater explosion research pioneer with participation as team leader in more than 60 underwater research programs. He was a lifetime member of St. Mary, Star of the Sea Knights of Columbus, American Defense Preparedness Assoc., Society for Professional Engineers and the VFW Post 1800. His hobbies included gardening, exercise, fishing, visiting the mountains and underwater diving. He also had his small aircraft pilot's license. Mass was held July 26 at St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Indian Head. Burial followed at St. Charles Cemetery, Glymont. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Charles County, P.O.
