Malachai was the son of William Shoemaker and Susanna Richardson. He married Susannah Shafer on Dec. 30, 1808 in Kingston, Luzerne Co., PA. She was the daughter of Adam Shafer and Elisabeth Swartwout. To this union eleven children were born; Susan, Payne Pettibone, Catherine, Malachai (d. as a toddler), William, Malachai Treat, Martha Ann, Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Sarah Lucinda, and Abram F.
Although he carried the last name of Shoemaker, Malachai was a hatter by trade. He was the first storekeeper in Fort Forty. In 1899, the Shoemaker family held its fourth annual family reunion in honor of Malachai and Susannah Shoemaker's family.
